Sample Board Morjo™ Iridescent Glass Tiles 3/4 Inch

Sample Board Morjo™ Iridescent Glass Tiles 3/4 Inch comes with one of each tile in our color palette in the 3/4 inch (20mm) size. The Morjo™ brand or iridescent tiles are mildly iridized so that the underlying colors aren’t obscured, which is a plus when creating images. Here is more information about the tiles and how they are used: Morjo™ Iridescent Glass Mosaic Tiles 3/4 inch (20mm) are sold loose by the half pound (approximately 75 pieces). The backs are plain colored glass with embossed ridges and grooves to help adhesives bond securely. The 3/4-inch width and ~1/8-inch thickness are standard dimensions, so you can mix and match these with many other brands of tile. All our glass tiles can be cut easily with the Mosaic Glass Cutter we sell.

MILDLY Iridized

Note that the iridescence is MILD and not so glossy that the underlying color is obscured. This is a definite plus because glass that is heavily iridized tends to look the same no matter what color the glass is underneath. These tiles show a significant amount of the underlying color and can be used to render polychromatic images.

Mosaic Tile Mesh 1 FOOT WIDE 150 ft Roll

mesh-roll-12-inch-wide

Mosaic Tile Mesh is 12 INCHES WIDE and 150 feet long in one continuous UNCUT piece. The mesh is made from woven fiberglass and is the same material that factories use for pre-mounting ceramic tile for rapid installation in walls, floors, and backsplashes. Artists use it in much the same way when laying up large designs, but the mesh is not needed for small mosaic art projects or surfaces such as tables where the tile can be glued directly to the surface.

Fiberglass mounting mesh is most useful for backsplashes and murals and floor medallions and other projects that are large or involve surfaces that can’t be monopolized for long periods of time. In these situations, the mosaic design is laid up on a worktable overs an extended period perhaps involving many different studio sessions, and then the finished design is installed in one session for attaching to the surface and a second session for grouting.

Tip: Even if your design is large, you will probably find it easier to cut the mesh up into 1 ft x 1 ft pieces and lay up your mosaic in these smaller sections. Anything larger than 3 ft x 3 ft is just too heavy and unwieldy to mount on a vertical surface.

Product Specifications

  • material: woven fiberglass mesh
  • unit weight: 4.3 oz/square meter (standard weight used for tile mounting)
  • width: 12 inches
  • length: 150 ft
  • alkali resistant
  • for use with glue or thinset.
  • Use a white PVA adhesive such as Weldbond to attach tiles to the mesh.

How to Use Mosaic Tile Mesh

Glue

Use a white PVA adhesive such as Weldbond to attach tiles to the mesh.

To avoid gluing your mesh to your work table, you should use a plastic table or cover the tray in plastic. Construction plastic or coroplast from the building store should work. If you have an old politician or real estate agent plastic advertisement sign from the side of the road you can probably use one of those.

Outdoor and Wet Installation

For outdoor and wet mosaics, it is best to avoid mesh and use mounting paper or mounting tape to temporarily face-mount the mosaic so that it can be pressed into thinset mortar without a layer of mesh and glue on the bottom. This is particularly important when your tiles are small. Mesh can be used in wet locations if glue is used sparingly and your tiles are large enough to safely cover the glue.

If you will be installing the mosaic outdoors or in a wet location, avoid completely covering the bottom of the tile with glue and keep the glue toward the center of the tiles. Leave the outer edges bare to bond directly to the thinset mortar used in final installation. Be careful not to get glue up the sides of the tile. If adhesive isn’t covered with grout, then water can wick underneath the grout over time and cause tiles to pop off. You should inspect the sheet of excess glue by misting it before it is installed. Any traces of glue on the sides and faces of the tile will start to turn white after a few minutes of being misted with water. Use a knife to scrape away any glue residues you see coming up the sides of the tile to face of the tile.

Working Size and Sections

Mesh covered with tile can be heavy and unwieldy, especially when mounted to a wall. You can lay strips of mesh side-by-side if you need a wider piece, but don’t try to vertically mount a one-piece mosaic larger than 3 foot x 3 foot. The standard practice is to lay up the mosaic on 1 foot x 1 foot pieces of mesh and match up the different sections when the mosaic is installed. Floor medallions 3 foot x 3 foot are sometimes made on one piece of mesh, but even though these are mounted horizontally, it still requires that the mosaic be carried on a piece of plywood and slid into place.

Final Mounting

To mount mesh sheets of mosaic to your surface, thinset mortar or adhesive should be spread on the surface with 1/4-inch notched trowel. We “butter” the bottom of the sheet with a little bit of the same adhesive in a thin coat before pressing the sheet into place. Make sure you allow the thinset or adhesive to cure for at least 24 hours before attempting to grout because grouting is a physical process that can easily knock tiles loose from uncured mounting.

Compatibility

The mesh is not used with tiles 3/8-inch or smaller because the holes in the mesh and the ridges on the bottoms of most glass tile make it difficult for small tile to sit level. For small tiles, you should use mounting paper to temporarily FACE-mount the tiles upside down. The product description for our mounting paper explains how that is done.

Use in Concrete Sculpture

The fiberglass mesh can also be used with other materials to make concrete sculptures for covering in mosaic.

Flower-Shaped Millefiori Artists Stocking-Stuffer Gift Pouch

flower-millefiori-promotions-v1

Flower-Shaped Millefiori Artist Stocking Stuffer Gift Pouch is our regular mosaic artist material and is pre-packed in a clear plastic gift pouch. Not recommended for young children who might put the pieces into their mouths. It looks like candy, and it is a choking hazard. Shaped Millefiori Glass 8mm-12mm (5/16 inch to 1/2 inch) by Mud Turtle Mosaic&trade is sold in 1.85-ounce units (approximately 55+ pieces). Instead of being round disks like regular millefiori, our Flower-Shaped Millefiori is in the shape of a five-petal flower.

What Is Millefiori?

Millefiori is a traditional form of art glass that is disk-shaped with different multicolored patterns and is commonly used in jewelry and mosaic art.

Product Coverage

This is a problematic question because the millefiori was intended to be used as an accent instead of as area coverage, and the piece size can vary. That being said, one 2-ounce bag should cover roughly 5 or 6 square inches, but that will depend somewhat on how efficiently you nest the pieces.

Compatibility

The thickness varies, and tends to run between 1/8 inch and 3/16 inch. This makes it about the same thickness as most of the glass mosaic tile we sell, although some pieces slightly thicker.

Cutting Millefiori

In theory the millefiori can be cut using a pair of Mosaic Glass Cutters, but the pieces are already small enough to make cutting unnecessary and problematic.

Flower-Shaped Millefiori

  • Price is per 1.85 ounces (approximately 55+ pieces)
  • Diameter: approximately 8 to 12 mm (5/16 inch to 1/2 inch).
  • Thickness: roughly 1/8 inch and 3/16 inch.
  • Coverage: each 1.85 ounce bag should cover roughly 5 or 6 square inches.
  • Material: glass with solid color throughout.
  • frost proof.
  • impervious to liquids.
  • Suitable for indoor and outdoor installation.
  • Not suitable for floors.

Morjo™ 8mm Recycled Glass Mosaic Tile Loose

8mm recycled glass mosaic tile Morjo brand

This color of 8mm Recycled Glass Mosaic Tile by MORJO is now being sold loose by the 8.8 oz (1/4 kilogram), which is just over 1/2 pound. This is approximately 350+ pieces, which covers about 0.28 square foot with a standard grout gap of 1/32 inch. These tiles have a glossy finish, and the glass has solid color throughout (and not just on the tops or bottoms.) They are opaque when mounted on an opaque surface.

These wonderful tiles cut cleanly into tiny pieces with minimal waste, so they are an ideal material for detailed omosaic artwork. They are hard and durable and UV-resistant and can be used for the exteriors of commercial buildings. The fusing process for making these tiles from powdered recycled glass is referred to as “warm glass” or “enamel glass” or “pate de verre.” Mounting grids are available.

Morjo 8mm Recycled Glass Mosaic Tile BAGGED

  • tile size: 8mm (~5/16 inch)
  • thickness: 1/8 nominal (4mm). Can be used with other brands.
  • sales unit: 8.8 oz (1/4 kg) approx 350+ tiles.
  • material: glass
  • variety: recycled glass
  • pigments: colorfast, UV resistant
  • durability: frost-proof, impervious to liquid
  • usage: suitable for indoor and outdoor use

Coverage

Each 8.8 oz bags covers approximately 0.28 of a square foot assuming a standard grout gap of 1/32 inch. Use our tile estimator to calculate how much you need for your grouted project.

Grout Gap?

Note that dry indoor mosaics do not have to be grouted (and thus you can simply mount the tiles tightly together), but outdoor and wet mosaics must have grout to prevent water from penetrating behind the tiles. The best way to ensure that the gaps between the tiles is to leave a 1/32-inch gap instead of pressing them tightly together, and this point seems counterintuitive to some people. Consider this: you can never mount them so closely together that water can’t penetrate it, but you can accidentally put them so close that grout doesn’t get adequately pressed into the crack during the grouting process.

Compatibility

These tiles have a NOMINAL thickness of 1/8 inch (4mm), which is the same nominal thickness as most of the glass tile we sell, but these run slightly thicker than Elementile and vitreous. Most users won’t notice the difference. These can be used with other brands of tile that is nominally 4mm thick.

Cutting Morjo 8mm Glass Mosaic Tile

The MORJO brand cuts like butter into tiny pieces using a pair of Mosaic Glass Cutters. You can make tiny cubes without a lot slivers or cutting waste. This makes them ideal for micromosaic or rendering small details in larger work.

Use in Mosaic Art

The color palette of the Morjo Recycled Glass Mosaic Tile is rich in hue and tint, and this makes it a professional rendering tool suitable for portraiture and murals. The material cuts very cleanly into small pieces that can be used for micromosaic artwork.

Micro-Mosaic Seed Beads 100 grams

Micro-Mosaic-Seed-Beads-banner

Micro-Mosaic Seed Beads are opaque glass beads have a nominal diameter of 1.9 mm, which means that they are tiny and aren’t intended for use in normal-sized mosaics made from glass tile. These are for micro-mosaic use. Sold in bags of 100 grams (~3.5 oz), which is about 6300+ beads. Tweezers are more or less required for handling these. We also recommend using a magnification lamp for micro-mosaic work.

Micro-Mosaic Seed Beads 100 grams

  • opaque glass beads.
  • manufacturer size 12/0.
  • Nominally 1.9 mm diameter with variation.
  • varies slightly in shape and length.
  • sold by the 100 grams (3.5 oz).
  • approximately 6300+ pieces.

Product Coverage

A 100-gram bag of Standard Seed Beads covers approximately 25+ square inches (5 in x 5 in), possibly more.

Compatibility

These are tiny and not meant for use alongside regular glass mosaic tile. These are for micro-mosaic use.

Cutting

These are too small to make cutting practical.

Standard Seed Beads 100 grams

Standard-Seed-Beads-banner

Standard Seed Beads are opaque glass beads have a nominal diameter of 3.6 mm, which makes them almost as thick as most glass mosaic tile. Sold in bags of 100 grams (~3.5 oz), which is about 1200+ beads. Use these to make lines and details in your glass tile mosaic by gluing them down on their sides. See tips below for making sure the beads are level with the tile.

Standard Seed Beads 100 grams

  • opaque glass beads.
  • manufacturer size 6/0.
  • Nominally 3.6 mm diameter with variation.
  • varies slightly in shape and length.
  • sold by the 100 grams (3.5 oz).
  • approximately 1200+ pieces.

Product Coverage

A 100-gram bag of Standard Seed Beads covers approximately 25+ square inches (5 in x 5 in), possibly more, but these are best used for outlines and details and accents rather than for area coverage.

Compatibility

These are slightly thinner than glass mosaic tile (~1/8 inch thick), and so if you glue them down alongside tile, they will be slightly lower, but you can solve the problem quite easily by building up the area where beads will go. The easiest way to do this is to apply some glue and let it dry. You can also sprinkle some sand in the glue before putting down the bead. Where there is a will, there is a way, usually multiple ways.

Cutting

These are too small to make cutting practical.

Morjo™ THIN Stained Glass Mosaic Tile 3/4 Inch

stained-glass-tiles-20mm-morjoMorjo™ Thin Stained Glass Mosaic Tiles 3/4-inch (20mm) are vibrant stained glass tiles with rich pigmentation and unique painterly characteristics. Opacity ranges from translucent and wispy to completely opaque. Many of these have streaks, swirls, and beautiful color variations that are particular to stained glass. Each 1/2-lb (8 oz) contains about 85 tiles. Thinner than most of the glass tile we sell, they work great in mixed media mosaics and on their own.

Morjo™ Stained Glass Tile 20mm

  • Price is for 8 ounces of loose tiles.
  • Each tile is 20mm x 20mm (~3/4 inch x 3/4 inch).
  • Pigments: colorfast metal oxide.
  • Solid color throughout.
  • Coverage: one bag will cover approximately 0.42 square feet when using a standard grout gap of 1/16 inch.
  • Cuts relatively easily with Mosaic Glass Cutters.
  • Thickness: nominally 2.88mm, which is about 35% thinner than vitreous glass tile, but appears to be over 3mm.
  • Suitable for indoor and outdoor installation.
  • NOT suitable for floors.

Product Coverage

Each bag covers about 0.42 square feet when mounted with a standard grout spacing on approximately 1/16 inch. Use our tile estimator to calculate how much you need for your project.

Compatibility

Tile thickness is nominally 2.88 mm, which is about 35% thinner than most of the glass mosaic tile we sell, but the actual thickness is probably running more than 3mm. Mixed-media mosaics and even mosaic table tops are routinely made from dissimilar materials with even greater differences in thickness. It makes grouting a little more work but not too difficult, and it is a great way to add texture and visual interest to a mosaic.

Cutting Tile

This tile can be cut with minimal force using the Mosaic Glass Cutters that we sell.

Mounting Stained Glass Tiles

For dry indoor mosaics, stained glass can be mounted using Weldbond adhesive, but thinset mortar should be used for outdoor and wet mosaics.

Use in Mosaic Art

Using different materials in mixed-media mosaic is a great way to add texture, dimension, and visual interest.

Not For Floors

Morjo™Stained Glass Mosaic Tiles 3/4 inch is non-porous and can be used outdoors, but we don’t recommend it for flooring.

Economy Glass Gems JUMBO

Economy-Glass-Gems-JUMBO-master-product

Economy Glass Gems JUMBO are dome-shaped lumps of glass with flat bottoms that can be used as tesserae (tile) in craft projects and mixed-media mosaic. They vary in size and shape. The nominal diameter of these MEDIUM gems is 25 to 33mm, which is about 1 to 1.3125 inch. BUT, those are nominal dimensions, and these should not be purchased by people needing gems with exact dimensions or shapes. Sold by the 1/2 pound.

Economy Glass Gems JUMBO

  • dome-shaped circular lumps with flat bottoms.
  • Nominally 1 to 1.3125 inch in diameter with variation.
  • varies in size and circularity.
  • sold by the 1/2 pound.

Product Variation

These gems are circular domes of glass, but they vary in size and exact shape. Please do NOT purchase these if you need tightly controlled shapes or sizes. Also, the glass is not optical quality and contains occasional bubbles. We sell these for use as mosaic tile, not covers for photo refrigerator magnets, etc.

Product Coverage

A 1-pound bag of glass gems covers approximately 30+ square inches. Glass gems are better used as accents than area coverage because they are circular and can nest together only so tightly. There will always be a larger than desired gap at the juncture between multiple gems.

Compatibility

Glass gems are thicker than most types of glass mosaic tile, which is usually ~1/8 inch thick. The glass gems are about ~3/16 inch thick, but that is approximate and not tightly controlled. The reason to use something like glass gems is precisely BECAUSE you want something that sticks out slightly above the surface of the ordinary tile. This gives the otherwise flat surface of the mosaic an element of dimension and texture, something that can be felt with the hand.

Cutting

Cutting glass gems leaves a sharp edge on an otherwise rounded shape, and for this reason it isn’t commonly done. The sharp edge can be smoothed using the fine side of a marble file, but that only removes the safety issue. Visually, the cut edge will still be sharp compared to the other part of the gem. If you do need to cut the gems, use a mosaic glass cutter.

Use In Mosaic Art

The tops of the glass gems are dome shaped instead of flat surfaces, and this has significant implications for the grouting process. When grouting a mosaic made from glass gems, many novices fail to remove enough grout, leaving most of the glass gem covered. The result is that the finished mosaic appears to be mostly grout with just a little bit of glass peeking out. You have to use your fingertips to remove the grout covering the edges of the gems and make sure that you expose more than just the very tops of the domes.

Morjo™ Metallic Glass Mosaic Tiles 3/4 Inch

morjo-metallic-glass-mosaic-tiles-v2

Morjo™ Metallic Glass Mosaic Tiles 3/4 inch (20mm) are beautifully pigmented glass tiles with sparkling copper streaks and swirls. Some, such as Deep Blue and Purple, also include stunning color streaks. Opacity varies from transparent to completely opaque. Powdered copper infused within the glass gives these tiles their permanent, UV-resistant sparkle. Each 1/2-lb bag contains about 75 tiles. They are durable, frost-proof, and suitable for outdoor mosaics, yet easily cut into halves, quarters, and triangles with little force using a pair of Mosaic Glass Cutters. The grooved embossing on the back improves bond strength.

Morjo™ 3/4-Inch Metallic Glass Mosaic Tiles

  • Sales unit: 1/2 pound (roughly 75+ tiles).
  • Tile dimensions: 3/4 inch x 3/4 inch (20mm x 20mm).
  • Tile thickness: 4mm (1/8 inch nominal).
  • Material: glass with metallic copper dust swirled inside the glass.
  • Coverage: each 1/2 pound covers 0.35 square feet.
  • Coverage: 218 loose tiles cover 1 sq ft. with grout spacing of 1/16 inch.
  • Frost-proof, impervious to liquid.
  • Suitable for indoor/outdoor use.

Product Coverage

Each pound covers 0.69 square feet, assuming a standard grout spacing of 1/16 inch. Coverage for 1 square foot requires 218 tiles. Note that cutting tiles generates some scrap, so you may want to budget 5% extra.

Compatibility

Our Metallic mosaic glass tile is compatible with our 3/4-inch Morjo™ Vitreous, Lojee-Nojee™, and Morjo™ Iridescent product lines. The 3/4 inch size (20mm) and 1/8 inch nominal thickness (4mm) is industry standard, which means these tiles can mix and match with a wide variety of brands.

Cutting Glass Tile

Though durable enough for outdoor mosaics, this tile cuts easily with minimal force using the mosaic glass cutters. Ordinary tile nippers are not recommended for any type of glass, as they will tend to crush the material rather than yield a precise cut.

Metallic Glass Tile in Mosaic Art

Even as an occasional accent, metallic glass tile will add sparkle, depth and luminosity to any mosaic project. Break up monochromatic color fields with their metallic equivalent, or sprinkle in pieces to add drama to your details.
