Painted Desert Assortment 3/4-Inch Glass Mosaic Tile Mix 1-lb

Our Painted Desert Glass Mosaic Tile Mix is a beautiful desert-themed glass tile assortment with warm earth tones, stone greys and blues, light sky teals and fire orange. This mix includes a combination of Morjo Vitreous and low-grain Lojee-Nojee tile, which adds textural variety and a great way to sample both brands.

These tiles are hard and durable enough for outdoor installation, yet they can quickly be cut into halves, quarters and triangles with little force using a pair of mosaic glass cutters. The grooved side bonds adhesive more securely and also makes for easier cutting. To plan your design, use a mounting grid.

For a mini version of this mix, check out our Albuquerque assortment.

Painted Desert Glass Mosaic Tile Assortment 3/4-Inch

  • Price is per 1 pound (roughly 145+ tiles).
  • Tile dimensions: 3/4 inch x 3/4 inch (20mm x 20mm).
  • Tile thickness: 4mm (1/8 inch nominal).
  • Material: glass
  • Coverage: each pound covers 0.69 square feet.
  • Coverage: 218 loose tiles cover 1 sq ft. with grout spacing of 1/16 inch.
  • Frost-proof, impervious to liquid.
  • Suitable for indoor/outdoor use.

Product Coverage

Each pound covers 0.69 square feet assuming a standard grout spacing of 1/16 inch. Coverage for 1 square foot requires 218 tiles. Note that cutting tiles generates some scrap, so you may want to budget 5% extra.

Compatibility

Because the 3/4 inch size (20mm) and 1/8 inch nominal thickness (4mm) is industry standard, you can combine these tiles with a wide variety of brands.

Cutting Glass Tile

We recommend the Mosaic Glass Cutter for cutting all types of glass mosaic tile including these. Note, however, that there is a limit to how small they can be cut. Due to their tapered edges, small pieces will tend to tip over. We advise cutting halves and quarters and diagonal triangles, and not much smaller than that. For creating outlines and other details, check out our Rectangle Border Tiles or our Outliners Mosaic Sticks.

Mounting Tile

Weldbond adhesive works well for mounting dry indoor mosaics. However, to permanently set outdoor and wet mosaics, use thinset mortar.

Use in Mosaic Art

The affordability, ease of use and durability of these tiles makes them suitable for outdoor projects such as garden décor. The pigment quality also lends itself equally well to photorealistic mosaic images and fine art.

Morjo™ Marble Mosaic Cutting Strips 6mm thick 1 lb

marble-cutting-strips-master

Morjo Marble Mosaic Cutting Strips are natural marble and stone tiles for making mosaic icons, fine art murals, and architectural coverings. Professional mosaic artists in Europe use this material to make ancient reproductions and original art. They can mount flat, laid on edge, or nipped short and laid on end to expose the natural cleaved surface.

The sides of the strips have a honed and unpolished finish. The sample board and sealed sample product photos show the color intensity when using a stone enhancer sealer, available from most local building material stores. Do NOT order sealers online during winter months where they can freeze during shipment.

WARNING: The widths vary between 8mm and 12mm. The lengths vary as shown in the photos, roughly 3/4 inch to 2 inches. These are professional cutting strips, not finished tiles. Do not order if you need uniform lengths or an unvarying width.

Cutting Marble Mosaic Strips

Marble Mosaic Cutting Strips are the easiest to cut stone we have ever used, and the reason is simple: the 6mm thickness is ideal for cutting yet still thick enough for the stone to have cohesive strength. You can cut these with an ordinary Tile Nipper! Depending on your grip strength, you may want to use a Compound Tile Nipper for even easier cuts.

SCRAP RATE: The amount of cutting waste and unexpected breakage from marble cutting strips varies by the type of stone. Most varieties cut with minimal waste, but some have 5% or even 10% cutting scrap rates depending on how small you are cutting the pieces. Please do not order if your learning curve or budget cannot tolerate some scrap. This professional rendering material represents the best of what is available on the market.

A Marble File is extremely useful for shaping hard materials. It is much easier to file off a tiny amount than it is to try to cut off a tiny amount.

Morjo Marble Mosaic Cutting Strips 6mm thick 1 lb

  • sales unit: 1 POUND loose marble tile strips.
  • piece count and lengths vary.
  • honed-finish natural dye-free stone.
  • thickness: 6mm (just under 1/4 inch).
  • width: varies 8mm-12mm.
  • length: varies 12mm-15mm (~3/4 inch to ~2 inches).
  • coverage: depends whether mounting flat (6mm thick) or on edge.
  • recommended for dry locations where water cannot pool.
  • vulnerable to freeze damage like all porous materials.
  • should be sealed with a tile and grout sealer to minimize staining and freeze damage.

Marble & Stone Material Clarification

Many varieties of marble mosaic tile are not technically marble. Other varieties of stone provide colors not available in marble, but all our marble is dye-free natural stone with an unsealed honed finish. The bottom of the factory sample board includes a separate section of synthetic stone described as “Quartz Colors” that we do not sell.

Expect Product Variation in Marble

Marble mosaic cutting strips are made of natural stone and as such have natural variation in pattern and coloration between pieces. That being said, this manufacturer produces fairly consistent batches and professional artists select it for that reason.

Avoid Matching with Other Manufacturers

Avoid matching our stone by color name to stone from other brands. Just because two marble varieties have same name does not mean they were sourced at the same quarry. There are many natural varieties of travertines, emperadors, etc. Two different factories or quarries might use the same name for stones that look different from each other.

Always Gather All Project Material Before Installing

Be aware that all forms of mosaic tile can and do vary by manufacturer batch. Given that, you should never order your materials in stages or begin installing tile before you have all that you will need. Even the most expensive brands of Italian glass tile come with warnings to inspect and mix different boxes of their tile before you install it. This caveat certainly applies to natural stone!

Marble Cutting Strips Coverage

Coverage depends on whether you are mounting the pieces flat (6mm thick) or on edge, or nipping short pieces and positioning with the cleaved face up. Laying the pieces flat, a pound covers about 42 square inches or 0.29 square feet. That means you need 3.4 pounds to cover 1 square foot.

Compatibility

Marble strip thickness is just under 1/4″, which is about twice as thick as most molded glass mosaic tile. When people augment stone tile with glass, they usually use the traditional hand-cut mosaic glass known as smalti, which has a similar thickness to stone tiles.

IMPORTANT INSTALLATION TIP

Grout will stain unpolished and unsealed stone tile because it is porous. Stone tile has to be sealed with a tile and grout sealer BEFORE you grout it. However, you shouldn’t seal any surface where grout or glue needs to stick to the stone (the sides). Here is what we recommend for pre-sealing porous materials before grouting:

  • Glue or cement your mosaic tiles into place.
  • Use a rag dampened with sealer or a small artists paint brush to seal only the top faces of the tiles.
  • Take care not to drip sealer down between the tiles or down the sides of the tiles.

We use TileLab brand Grout and Tile Sealer for a normal seal. To slightly enhance/darken the stone colors (recommended), we use TileLab brand Stone Enhancer and Sealer. Both of these products are available at Home Depot. More expensive premium products are available. Scroll through product photos to see the difference in each variation with enhancer.

Using Marble Strips in Outdoor Mosaic Art

Most people think that stone is more durable than glass for outdoor mosaic art, but actually the reverse is true for several reasons:

Marble & Stone Hardness Varies

Not all stone is hard, and natural stone only comes in so many colors. To get the range of colors needed to make a mosaic, softer varieties of stone are sometimes all that is available for a particular color. One example is honey onyx (actually a calcite). This is especially true when you are discussing affordable types of stone. Sure, emeralds are a rich green, but they are also relatively rare, small and expensive.

Stone Tile Porosity and Freeze Damage

Glass is non-porous, and thus water cannot penetrate into it and then freeze and expand. But it can cause porous stone to crack and flack away. Keep in mind that the reason we have so many ancient Greek and Roman mosaics after millennia is that the Mediterranean climate is relatively warm and dry. It also helped that many of the ones we now have were buried for centuries.

Marble Tile is Chemically Vulnerable

Remember that not all marble mosaic tile is technically marble, and even if it were, marble isn’t that hard. It is also susceptible to chemical damage by naturally occurring substances. For example, decaying organic matter such as rotting leaves produces acid. Marble dissolves in acid. (You can actually listen to marble fizz when you pour vinegar on it). This is how the acid rain from automobile exhaust in European cities has melted ancient statues. Other varieties of stone are also vulnerable to organic acids and other natural substances.

How To Make Marble Mosaics Last

Marble mosaic cutting strips (and the other stone types described as marble) work best for indoor mosaics where water cannot pool on the surface. However, marble can hold up outdoors provided you seal it very well with a tile and grout sealer and check the seal every few years. (Make sure that water is still beading on the surface instead of soaking in). Sealing and periodic checking are advised with all outdoor mosaics because grout is porous and vulnerable to freeze damage.

Outdoor marble mosaics should be on vertical surfaces such as walls instead of horizontal surfaces such as bench seats or paths.

Broken, Reworked, & Salvaged Mosaic Tile Assortment

Broken, Reworked and Salvaged Mosaic Tile Assortment is a colorful 1-lb assortment of mosaic material. It varies by batch but usually includes marble cubes and pieces, glass tile, porcelain tile, iridescent and metallic tile, translucent glass gems, minis, imitation gold, millefiori, toy marbles, beads, etc. It is a great way to get a sample of different products to see what you enjoy working with.

The Salvage Assortment includes many tiles that are whole and clean. It also includes broken tile, occasional sharp pieces and tiles that still have mesh or adhesive stuck to the back. Please do not order the assortment if that is a problem.

Each 1-pound scoop varies, but should include fragments and pieces of most types of tile we sell, plus odd samples from manufacturers.

Broken, Reworked and Salvaged Mosaic Tile Assortment

  • thickness: 1/8″ and thicker

Cutting Salvaged Mosaic Tile

Cut glass, porcelain and ceramic tile using our Wheeled Glass Cutter. For thicker marble pieces and any extremely hard tile, use our Compound Nipper.

Smalti Assortment SM-RAINBOW 1-POUND

Smalti Assortment 1 Pound MTM SM-MX00

Smalti Assortment SM-MX00 1-POUND is a bulk assortment of our smalti. This mix contains all of the colors we carry, but there may be more of some colored tiles and fewer of others. We try to homogenize the blend, but getting an exactly even amount of each color would be exceedingly difficult.

Smalti is traditional hand-cut mosaic glass that has a different look and feel from molded tile. It is the glass to use for reproducing religious icons, antique mosaic art, or making modern interpretations of classical designs. This assortment is sold by the pound, which is 160+ pieces on average.

Mud Turtle Mosaic™ brand smalti is a next-generation smalti. It looks like ordinary smalti (non-molded hand-cut rectangles), but it can be cut more predictably and cleanly with less waste and fewer shards, which often an issue with smalti. Avoid having to discard a significant percentage of your expensive materials as cutting scrap. This brand cuts more efficiently because of how it is poured and cooled. With Mud Turtle Mosaic™ smalti, extra care is taken to ensure that the mixture is more homogeneous and that little or no cold seams are formed during the pouring of the molten material out on the slab. The result is that are fewer blobs and swirls and fault plains inside the glass. These artificial internal structures are what causes regular smalti to break in such odd ways and form such vicious finger-poking shards. With this brand, there are also fewer surface pits and crevices for grouts and mortars to contaminate.

Product Coverage

Traditionally mosaics made from smalti were not grouted. However, if your mosaic will be outdoors or in a wet location, then you need to leave a gap between the tiles so that if can be filled with grout to seal out moisture. Having a grout gap means that you will need about 10 to 15% less smalti than otherwise.

Piece Count

One sales unit (1 pound) USUALLY contains 160+ pieces, with 168 being the average for the material we sampled. However, the smalti is sold by weight, and if the factory cuts a batch with slightly larger pieces, then that batch will have fewer pieces per pound.

Compatibility

Smalti is hand cut when it is made at the factory, and so it had a different look and feel from regular molded glass mosaic tile that is pressed into a uniform shape. Smalti is also significantly thicker than most of the glass tile we sell. For these reasons, mosaics look best when they are made from one type material or the other but not both.

Cutting Smalti

Mud Turtle Mosaic™ Smalti cuts extremely well with the mosaic glass cutters that we sell.

Smalti Mosaic Glass

  • Price for this assortment is per pound, which is USUALLY 160+ pieces.
  • The factory could potentially cut the pieces slightly larger, which would reduce the piece count per pound.
  • hand-cut non-molded rectangular pieces.
  • variable dimensions: ~1/4 inch x ~5/8 inch x ~1/4 inch thick.
  • coverage: about 2.5 to 3 pounds per square foot with coverage being affected by how the smalti is cut by the artist.
  • Pigments: colorfast metal oxide.
  • Solid color throughout.
  • Opaque.
  • Cut surface is glossy.
  • Cuts relatively easily with mosaic glass cutters.
  • Heat, frost and chemical resistant.
  • Suitable for both commercial and residential installation, indoors and out.

Use in Mosaic Art

This smalti is probably the best you can find if you need to render small details in smalti because it can be cut smaller with less waste than other brands. It also has little or no surface pitting, so you can grout a mosaic made from this material without having specks of grout remaining all over the face of the mosaic in pits. The product is highly recommended.

Mosaic Art Glass Assortment 2-lbs

MAG Assortment Collage

Our Mosaic Art Glass Assortment includes 2-lbs of American-made stained glass pieces for making mosaic artwork. With opaque mosaic work surfaces in mind, we choose pieces for pigment density and opacity. These assortments offer a great way to sample a wide variety of stained glass types and colors. We also sell individual colors of stained glass in 6-inch sheets if you need an individual color. Piece size varies, but we try to cut pieces 2 to 3 inches wide, so there should be fewer pieces measuring 1 inch or less. Cutting Scrap will have smaller pieces.

  • Black White Gray – grayscale stained glass mix
  • Blue – variety of dark-to-light blue stained glass
  • Designer Neutrals and Foggy Grays – unusual odds-and-ends, muted and variegated pieces, landscape tones
  • Glass on Glass Mix Translucents and Transparents – foggy, cloudy, see-through multicolored mix**
  • Golden Amber Brown – variety of brown-beige stained glass
  • Green – variety of dark-to-light green stained glass
  • Iridized – all-iridescent multicolored mix**
  • Premium – rainbow+ assortment with red-orange-yellow, pink-purple, blue-green, brown, black and white
  • Sunset – warm gradient mix of red-orange-yellow and pink-purple
  • *All mixes may include one Ripple/textured piece. **All mixes emphasize opacity except Glass on Glass Mix, and Iridized may include clear iridescents.

    Product Coverage

Each two-pound bag is approximately 1.25 square feet of stained glass. If you cut these pieces into mosaic tiles of about 3/4 inch or less and use a grout gap of 1/16 inch, then the bag could cover 1.5 square feet.

    Compatibility

Stained glass is approximately 1/8 inch thick and therefore nominally the same as most of the glass mosaic tile we sell. We also have 3/4-inch stained glass tiles.

    Cutting Art Glass

Mosaic Art Glass cuts quickly with minimal force using our Mosaic Glass Cutters. Caution: Stained glass is usually sharper than regular molded glass mosaic tile. Extra care must be used in cutting, handling, and grouting to ensure that sharp edges are not left exposed. One technique to knock off the razor slivers from freshly-cut stained glass edges (called flash or groze) is to swirl pieces around in a plastic bucket with a little water. The Rubbing Stone and Marble File we sell are useful for smoothing sharp edges and are recommended when the mosaic is for a wall or architectural element.

The traditional stained glass artists’ tool for smoothing edges is the Grozing Pliers, but the Rubbing Stones and Marble Files produce smoother edges and can round off sharp points and corners.

    Mosaic Art Glass Assortment 2-lbs

    • Material: untumbled stained glass with sharp edges.
    • Piece size: varies, but most should be ABOUT 2 to 3 inches.
    • Thickness is nominally 1/8 inch but varies considerably, typically around +/- 1/32 inch.
    • Coverage: a 2-pound bag covers about 1.25 square feet.
    • American made.
    • Pigments: colorfast metal oxide.
    • Suitable for indoor/outdoor use.
    • Frost-proof and impermeable to liquid.
    • Not recommended for floors.
    • Colors vary based on availability, but we keep it colorful with an emphasis on brighter, stronger colors.

Individual Colors Available As 6-Inch Sheets

If you need an individual color or found one you especially liked in an assortment, see our 6-inch stained glass sheet selection.

Mosaic Art Supply does not share or sell customer data, and our credit card processing is encrypted and done using the bank’s server instead of our website server. Our entire website including checkout uses 256-bit encryption. Read more about security and privacy at Mosaic Art Supply.

Make sure that your antivirus software has been updated and periodically run scans of your computer. Remember, credit card theft is much more likely on a customer’s own unprotected computer than it is on a merchant’s website.

    Urgent Orders

UPS Next Day Air orders placed after 2pm eastern cannot ship before the following weekday. The reason is simple: UPS picks up between 4 and 4:30pm eastern.

Most orders will ship within 1 to 2 business days. Large or special orders may take longer.

UPS Next-Day Air, 2nd Day Air and 3-Day Select refer to business days (M-F) and do NOT count weekends and holidays. That is UPS policy, not ours.

If you need something urgently, go ahead and place the order instead of waiting for us to reply to an email. If you are concerned if it will arrive by your deadline, then paste the following message in the Special Instructions during checkout: “Cancel this order if it won’t arrive by day/date.”

Do not put any other questions or conditions on an urgent order. That is a sure way to have your order held up in the warehouse.

    Shipping INTERNATIONAL

Mosaic Art Supply ships around the globe using USPS Priority Mail and USPS Express Mail.

There are special rates for Mexico and Canada. All International flat-rate boxes are limited to 20 lbs (9 kgs). See current international rates at USPS.

However, we occasionally grant exceptions on a very limited basis, IF the customer has done the following:

    Purchase Orders

We do take POs. Our only requirement is that you place an unofficial website order and select MONEY ORDER as the payment method. In the Order Notes during checkout, please paste the following:

“For estimation purposes only. Not an official order. Wait for possible PO.”

PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU CLICK ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE CHECKOUT AND SUBMIT THE ORDER, ELSE THERE IS NO RECORD OF IT ON OUR END.

An unofficial website order is REQUIRED because:

    • It makes sure that all items are available and aren’t being purchased by someone else.
    • It allows you to fill out your PO correctly, including shipping charges.
    • We need the unofficial website order for tax, inventory, and accounting reasons.

You can e-mail or Fax your PO to us at 404-795-0444. Make sure you write the invoice number from our website on your PO because we get MANY school orders and repeat orders.

    American-Made Glass and Ceramic Tile

For environmental, economic and political reasons, it is increasingly important to purchase materials produced here in the United States. In the long run, it doesn’t benefit anyone to ship jobs where people and the environment are exploited for short-term gains, and it makes little sense to throw away our manufacturing base, which is the real source of any nation’s economic strength. Fortunately, some of the most colorful and beautiful art glass in the world is made in America.

    Real Stained Glass

    Stained Glass Banner
Our stained glass is made by four different American manufacturers.
This is NOT the cheap chips of barely-tinted glass commonly sold in assortments for craft projects. Our stained glass is proudly made by Kokomo, Spectrum, Armstrong, and Wissmach right here in the US, and it has much greater color density, opacity and consistency than art glass produced in Asia. There are several reasons to use stained glass in your mosaics. First of all, stained glass isn’t grainy like most varieties of vitreous glass mosaic tile. The colours are much richer and more luminescent than vitreous, and this is true even when comparing muted and less-intense colors like gray or olive. Unlike fully-opaque tile, most stained glass is partially translucent which allows light to penetrate into the glass and produce maximum color. Another reason to use stained glass is that it comes in larger pieces, and you can hand cut your own individual tiles with slightly irregular shapes. This gives a mosaic a more authentic handmade look, which can be difficult to achieve when using machine-molded square tile. However, stained glass has more or less the same thickness as vitreous glass mosaic tile, and that means it is possible to use both materials in the same mosaic, provided no sharp edges are left exposed. The main safety concern with stained glass is the potential for sharp edges, which are sharper than most other types of tile, but this problem can be minimized by taking care to install the tile flat and flush, and then grout thoroughly. Dual-Grit Rubbing Stones and Marble Files are useful for reducing sharp edges on hand-cut tile.

    American-Made Glass Mosaic Tile

    Glass Gem Banner
The glass gems we sell are made in the USA.
Glass gems are blobs of glass that look like large beads of water: rounded domes that are flat on the bottom. They can be used as an improvised form of glass mosaic tile and work well as accents in stepping stones and mixed-media mosaic. Most brands of glass gems can only be used in vases and other containers because their colors are too faint to show up well when the gems are laid out flat. Our glass gems were chosen for their luminous colors and pigment density. They were made by Marble King in the US in their Paden City, West Virginia plant, and they knock the socks off most glass gems made in Asia.

    Ceramic Number and Letter Tile

    Ceramic Letter Banner
CowTown Ceramics makes these ceramic letters and numbers.
Ceramic Letter and Number Tile sets are made in the US by CowTown Ceramics. The letters and numbers come in sheets that are easily snapped apart by hand to produce individual embossed letter and number tiles. These are great for mixed media mosaic projects like stepping stones, mosaic “samplers” with quotes, and address plaques.
