Morjo ™ 8mm Recycled Glass Mosaic Tile

8mm recycled glass mosaic tile Morjo brand

8mm Recycled Glass Mosaic Tile by MORJO Mosaic Tile are sold on removable paper sheets of 100 tiles glued face down with chalky-backs showing. (Remove paper and chalky mold release by soaking for about 1/2 hour.) Each sheet covers approximately 1/12 of a square foot assuming a grout gap of ~1/32 inch. These tiles have a glossy finish, and the glass has solid color throughout (not just on the tops or bottoms.) Opaque when mounted on an opaque surface. Back sides are chalky, but they wash clean when the paper is soaked off the faces. More details below:

Chalky BACKS of tile are showing. The faces are nice and glossy, but they come face down on the removable paper sheets. Soak the tiles for about a half hour to remove the paper.

These wonderful tiles cut cleanly into tiny pieces with minimal waste, so they are an ideal material for micromosaic artwork. They are hard and durable and UV-resistant and can be used for the exteriors of commercial buildings. The fusing process for making these tiles from powdered recycled glass is referred to as “warm glass” or “enamel glass” or “pate de verre.” Mounting grids are available.

Soaking To Remove Paper

Soaking to remove paper is NOT extra work! Why not? Because you should always rinse loose tile to remove glass dust created during shipment. These tiles are glued with starch glue, which turns to jelly in water and is rinsed away. Please do not order if that is a problem. These are a premium material intended for artists wanting the best colors at a competitive price. Soak for less than 1/2 hour to avoid turning the paper to pulp.

White Chalk on Bottoms

There is factory chalk on the bottoms of the tiles, which rinses off easily in the soaking process. The tiles look as photographed on our website once soaked free of the paper.

Using Sheets? WARNING

These are mounted on paper, but the spacing isn’t perfect due to the small size of the tile, which could be an issue if you are mounting whole sheets to cover areas. DO NOT ORDER IF THAT IS A PROBLEM FOR YOUR PROJECT. All that being said, you could pull off any tiles that aren’t exactly in line and mount those later, which is the standard method for dealing with irregularities in sheet-mounted tile. We recommend using larger tiles for covering architectural surfaces.

Morjo 5/16-Inch Recycled Glass Mosaic Tile

  • tile size: 8mm (~5/16 inch)
  • thickness: 1/8 nominal (4mm), but runs slightly thicker than most other brands nominally 4mm. Can be used with other brands.
  • sales unit: 100 tiles temporarily mounted face down on paper.
  • sheet size: 3.5 x 3.5 inches (~1/12 square foot).
  • material: glass
  • variety: recycled glass
  • pigments: colorfast, UV resistant
  • durability: frost-proof, impervious to liquid
  • usage: suitable for indoor and outdoor use

Coverage

Each sheet of 100 tiles is a little over 3.5 inch x 3.5 inch and covers approximately 1/12 of a square foot assuming a standard grout gap of 1/32 inch. Use our tile estimator to calculate how much you need for your grouted project. For no grout gap, you will need about 11.8 sheets to cover each square foot.

Grout Gap?

Note that dry indoor mosaics do not have to be grouted (and thus you can simply mount the tiles tightly together), but outdoor and wet mosaics must have grout to prevent water from penetrating behind the tiles. The best way to ensure that the gaps between the tiles is to leave a 1/32-inch gap instead of pressing them tightly together, and this point seems counterintuitive to some people. Consider this: you can never mount them so closely together that water can’t penetrate it, but you can accidentally put them so close that grout doesn’t get adequately pressed into the crack during the grouting process.

Compatibility

These tiles have a NOMINAL thickness of 1/8 inch (4mm), which is the same nominal thickness as most of the glass tile we sell, but these run slightly thicker than Elementile and vitreous. Most users won’t notice the difference. These can be used with other brands of tile that is nominally 4mm thick.

Cutting Morjo 8mm Glass Mosaic Tile

The MORJO brand cuts like butter into tiny pieces using a pair of Mosaic Glass Cutters. You can make tiny cubes without a lot slivers or cutting waste. This makes them ideal for micromosaic or rendering small details in larger work.

Use in Mosaic Art

The color palette of the Morjo Recycled Glass Mosaic Tile is rich in hue and tint, and this makes it a professional rendering tool suitable for portraiture and murals. The material cuts very cleanly into small pieces that can be used for micromosaic artwork.

$75 Gift Certificate Mosaic Art Supply

Our printable gift certificates are delivered to you as a digital copy to your email by default, so you don’t have to wait.

On the gift certificate is a PIN number which the recipient can use as store credit.

Why A Gift Certificate Is Best

Artists like to choose their own colors and materials, so a gift certificate is a good way to get them exactly what they want, while trying to pick for them is problematic. When in doubt, get the gift certificate. It’s easier, and they won’t be disappointed. Your artist will also have access to all the mosaic tips and instructions at our website, which is the largest, most complete online source of how-to-mosaic information.

Mosaic Tips and Instructions

All of our online mosaic content was written by a professional artist who also holds an engineering degree and has worked in a materials testing laboratory.

Beware Of Questionable Information

There is quite a bit of instructional material online, and a lot of it is questionable, particularly when it comes to crafts. All too much of it was written merely to drive sales without regard to durability or longevity. For example, you can see websites recommending the use of water-soluable glues to attach tile to terracotta flower pots, which is problematic for several reasons and not likely to last. For comparison, here is something our mosaic artist wrote about potential problems with mosaic flower pots and how to fix them.

How To Mosaic Blog

Our How To Mosaic Blog is where we post new content written after 2013. Check it regularly for new articles concerning all aspects of making a mosaic: choosing a grout color, how to transfer a pattern, how to make a mosaic lawn sculpture, etc.

Mosaic FAQs

Our page of Frequently Asked Questions addresses many basic issues and is organized by topic. A novice could get oriented and avoid many classic mistakes merely by skimming through this page.

Mosaic Instructions

We have many different mosaic instruction pages, and most of these are described in our Mosaic Information Page.

Large 7-Inch Tweezers

Large 7-Inch Tweezers for positioning mosaic tile.

The 7-Inch Steel Tweezers are a larger option for those who find our regular thumb tweezers too small or whose hands can better hold something with extra length. The function is essentially the same: reducing tedium and frustration in positioning tiny tiles. These tweezers were not specifically manufactured for mosaic, but we would not recommend doing mosaic work without it or some sort of tweezers, especially if using tile or pieces cut 3/8 inch or smaller.

How to Reduce Frustration

Tweezers make it infinitely easier to dip your tile in adhesive or thinset without contaminating your fingertips. They also makes it much easier to position the tile on the surface without messing up what you have already done. Most of the frustration of making a mosaic comes from accidentally bumping tiles that you have already positioned, and tweezers keep this from happening quite so often. The trivial cost of a basic pair of tweezers is the best money you can spend as far as reducing frustration. You will also be able to attempt more detailed designs than you would consider if using only your fingertips.

Colored Glass Mirror Tile Sample Board 15mm

Sample Board Colored Mirror Tile 15mm

Colored Glass Mirror Tile 15mm is sold in sheets of 36 tiles face-mounted on clear plastic film. These are high-quality tile suitable for architectural installation indoors and outdoors. Avoid using mounting mesh. Avoid using in high chlorine and high sulfur environments or cleaning with acid.

Unlike the cheap crafting tiles sold by our competitors, the silver is more securely bonded into the back side of the glass, and the glass is actually colored (except for Gilt, Metallic, Brass, etc., where the metallic color comes from the alloy of silver used on the back). The use of colored glass is important because the surface coatings on the competitor’s product are easily scratched off the cheap clear glass. The foil on their product also comes off the glass when the tiles are cut. Not so with our mirror tile. You can cut them with confidence. Read our warning about the inferior mirror tile sold by competitors.

Price is per sheet of 36 tiles. Note that the sheet has a standard grout gap of 1/16 inch between tiles, but our photos show the tiles with no space between. Mounting grids are available.

Colored Glass Mirror Tile 15mm

  • tile size: 9/16 inch (15mm)
  • thickness: 1/8 nominal (4mm)
  • sales unit: 36 tiles temporarily mounted face down on clear plastic film
  • sheet size: 3.875 x 3.87 inches
  • material: glass
  • variety: translucent colored glass with slight ripples and bubbles in the surface for an artistic look
  • pigments: colorfast, UV resistant
  • durability: impervious to liquid

Limitations of Use

The manufacturer says that swimming pools are acceptable, but these are a new product, and long-term test data for use in pools does not exist. (Use in pools would be at customer risk and require best practices for grouting and sealing.)

  • Install INDOORS for longest life.
  • OUTDOOR use should be ok, but avoid high chlorine and sulfur environments and cleaning with acid.
  • Product has been tested in UV sunlight and installed in low and high temperature locations with no problems observed to date.
  • Avoid using mounting mesh.
  • Avoid using in environments high in chlorine or sulfur.
  • Our opinion is that these could last a long time in an outdoor mosaic patio table if thoroughly sealed, but these are a new product and aging over years and decades is unknown.

Coverage

With a standard grout gap of approximately 1/16 inch, one sheet of 36 tile will cover approximately 0.11 square foot. Nine (9) sheets covers 1 square feet.

Compatibility

Tile thickness is 1/8 inch nominal, the same as most of the glass mosaic tile we sell, which means that these can be used with other types and brands.

Cutting Colored Glass Mirror Tile 15mm

We recommend using the wheel-blade Mosaic Glass Cutter we sell to cut these and other types of glass mosaic tile. Unlike the cheaply made mirror-tiles sold be competitors, these tiles can be cut without causing the silver to fall of the glass.

Use in Mosaic Art

These are mirror tiles, but there is waviness in the glass and silver which make the reflections distorted compared to a normal flat mirror. The purpose of the mirror is in these tiles is to reflect light not distinct images. Do not order if that is a problem. There is a fairly complete color palette available, and so an artist could render and image using only these mirror tiles, but they can be used with standard-finish varieties of glass tile.

Plastic Storage Jar Square-Grip Clear PET 32oz

Plastic Storage Jar Square-Grip Clear PET 32oz

Plastic Storage Jar Square-Grip Clear PET 32oz is perfect for storing and displaying glass mosaic tile. The square shape makes these jars stack efficiently in a small bookshelf. The clear plastic makes the contents visible, which is essential for storing studio materials that are chosen on sight. Holds about 2 to 3 pounds of tile.

Product Specifications

  • Square-grip plastic storage jar
  • black ribbed lid with liner
  • quantity: 1 each
  • Width: 3.7 in
  • Height: ~5.5 in with lid

How to Use Plastic Storage Jar Square-Grip Clear PET 32oz

Mosaic tile should be displayed side by side in the studio so that the artist can select just the right color. These clear plastic jars make this possible. We arrange our shelves in “rainbow order” (red-orange-yellow-green-blue-purple-pink) plus browns and black-white-grays. This allows use to find colors quickly, and so we always return the colors to this order, but during a studio session, we are constantly pulling out jars and placing them in different combinations. This is how we quickly evaluate different color schemes for a mosaic before we even start taking tile out of the jar.
