Product Coverage

Each pound covers 0.69 square feet assuming a standard grout spacing of 1/16 inch. To cover 1 square foot, 218 tiles are required. Note that cutting tiles generates some scrap, so you may want to budget 5% extra.

Compatibility

Because the 3/4 inch size (20mm) and 1/8 inch nominal thickness (4mm) is industry standard, you can combine these tiles with a wide variety of brands.

Cutting Glass Tile

We recommend the Mosaic Glass Cutter for cutting all types of glass mosaic tile including these. Note, however, that there is a limit to how small they can be cut. Due to their tapered edges, small pieces will tend to tip over. We advise cutting halves and quarters and diagonal triangles, and not much smaller than that. For creating outlines and other details, check out our Rectangle Border Tiles or our Outliners Mosaic Sticks.

Mounting Tile

Weldbond adhesive works well for mounting dry indoor mosaics. However, to permanently set outdoor and wet mosaics, use thinset mortar.

Use in Mosaic Art

The affordability, ease of use and durability of these tiles makes them suitable for outdoor projects such as garden décor. The pigment quality also lends itself equally well to photorealistic mosaic images and fine art.

mosaic-tile-studio-display-jar-8oz

These the perfect size for holding about half a pound or more of glass tile in a relatively tall shape, thus allowing you to display a rainbow of colors side by side on a single shelf. The tall shapes of the jars also make it easier to rinse and drain tile to remove dust and slivers formed by cutting.

Product Specifications

  • includes gold-tone lid
  • volume: 8 oz
  • capacity: 0.5 to 0.75 lbs of 8mm glass tile
  • width: 2.2 inch
  • height: 5.1 inch
  • TILE NOT INCLUDED

Glass Jar for Mosaic Tile Display

There is a human-factors aspect to displaying/storing tile in this way. It’s the opposite of “out of sight, out of mind.” When the color palette is readily visible, artists make better decisions about color.

That is why many experienced artists keep a color wheel tacked to their easel. They are painfully aware that what a color looks like depends on what other colors are around it. Having your colors arranged and on display in a format where you can easily put one color next to another is a huge advantage in the studio.

MiniGee 10mm MINI Low-Grain Glass Mosaic Tile

MiniGee Low-Grain Venetian Glass Tile 10 mm

MiniGee glass mosaic tile by Morjo are the MINI 10mm versions of our Lojee-Nojee glass tiles. These are a low-grain variety of vitreous glass with much fewer specks. Most colors have no specks at all. These tiles are sold loose by the quarter kilogram (8.5 ounces = approximately 375 pieces). They are UV resistant and factory certified for commercial exteriors, swimming pools, backsplashes, showers, murals, as well as art-&-craft projects like mosaic stepping stones. You can use these with other brands of 3/8 inch (10mm) vitreous. The red, orange, and yellow colors in our mini Morjo vitreous compliment the Lojee Nojee color palette quite well.

The backs of these glass mosaic tiles are embossed to help the cement or adhesive bond more securely. Except of 1 or 2 colors, the embossed pattern is the tic-tac-toe pattern most people prefer for ease of cutting. See photos. They are competitively priced yet suitable for fine art. Mounting grids are available.

MiniGee Low-Grain Glass Mosaic Tile 3/8-Inch

  • tile size: 3/8 inch (10mm
  • thickness: 1/8 nominal (4mm)
  • sales unit: 8.5 ounces (approximately 375 tiles)
  • material: glass
  • variety: low-grain vitreous for fewer specks
  • pigments: colorfast, UV resistant
  • durability: frost-proof, impervious to liquid
  • usage: suitable for indoor and outdoor use

Coverage

With a standard grout gap of approximately 1/32 inch, one bag of approximately 375 tiles will cover 0.48 square feet. Approximately 731 loose tiles are needed to cover 1 square foot using the standard grout gap. If you are not using a grout gap (not recommended for wet mosaics or mosaics subject to freezing precipitation), then you need about 930 tiles to cover each square foot, You can use our tile estimator to calculate how much you need for your project.

Compatibility

Tile thickness is 1/8 inch nominal, the same as most of the glass mosaic tile we sell, which means that these can be used with other types and brands. There are larger 20mm versions of these available (Logee Nogee), and many of the color names are the same, but do not assume that they will match exactly because our current inventory of each size often comes from different manufacturer batches.

Cutting Morjo 3/8-Inch Vitreous

We recommend using the wheel-blade Mosaic Glass Cutter we sell to cut all types of glass mosaic tile including vitreous. (Regular tile nippers are for ceramic tile, and they tend to crush glass tile.)

Note that there is a practical limit to how small they can be cut because the sides of the tiles are tapered, and small pieces tend to fall over. We cut halves and quarters and diagonal triangles but do not try to go small than that, at least most of the time. If you are making the fine details of your image and need to cut smaller, you can lean pieces against each other, but that can get tedious.

Using Vitreous in Mosaic Art

The Morjo brand is economical enough for use in craft projects, but it can also be used for fine art and murals. There are enough colors available in the brand itself to render sophisticated images, including naturalistic portraits and landscapes, and these can be combined with other brands of the same size.

Glass Pebble Gems 6-9mm Flame Polished 1/4 pound

Glass Pebble Gems Flame Polished 6-9mm

Glass Pebble Gems are our recommended alternative to regular glass gems and are much easier to grout. Our flame-polished Glass Gem Pebbles are irregular lumps that can be nested closely together than uniform dome-shaped glass gems. The size range is 6 to 9mm nominal (less than 3/8 inch). Sold by the 1/4 pound (approximately 200 pieces), which can cover an area of approximately 20+ square inches.

Glass Pebble Gems

  • irregular lumps of glass.
  • flame polished.
  • nominal size: 6 to 9 mm (less than 3/8 inches).
  • varies in size and shape.
  • sold by the 1/4 pound.
  • approximately 200 pieces.

Why Better Than Ordinary Gems

Most glass gems are dome-shaped with shouldering sides, which results in oversized grout gaps unless you erode the grout somewhat during the grouting process. That is a lot of work and is hard to do evenly. Our Glass Gem Pebbles are irregular lumps that can be nested closely together than uniform dome-shapes, and so the grout gap is smaller. The smaller the grout-gap is, the easier to grout and the more colorful the results. The Glass Gem Pebbles are also closer in thickness to 4mm thick glass tile.

Product Variation

These are irregular lumps of glass made by flame polishing broken glass. Expect variation in size and shape. Dimensions are nominal and approximate.

Product Coverage

A 1/4-pound bag covers approximately 20+ square inches.

Compatibility

Glass Gem Pebbles have an average thickness that is close to the thickness of most of our glass tile. That makes it easier to use these with glass tile in the same mosaic.

Cutting

These are small enough to make cutting unnecessary. Most glass is cut with a mosaic glass cutter.

Hercules Precision Stone Chopping Machine 17KG Model

Hercules Precision Stone Chopping Machine Model 17KG

The Hercules Precision Stone Chopping Machine Model 17KG is factory-grade equipment for making precision cuts in marble mosaic tile and hard porcelain. The machine’s upper blade is lowered by a screw mechanism that requires much less effort than handheld cutting tools, and the cuts are made smoothly and efficiently. There’s no comparison really. This machine is designed to be operated all day long in a commercial environment. No worker could make as many cuts in a day with a nipper.

The cut quality is also vastly superior. With the chopping machine, you have more precise control and can cut thinner sections. The lower blade is adjustable to ensure the most precise cuts possible. Made in Turkey by the Birgul Gul company.

See one of these in action in this video where we restore a damaged marble mosaic. A Hercules chopper can be seen starting around 1 minute 20 seconds into the video. We also have an example photo of a marble mosaic with many narrow rectangles in the background. All of the narrow rectangles with long straight edges were cut using the same Hercules chopper.

The cutting blades that come installed in the machine work very well for all types of marble and stone.

Hercules Precision Stone Chopping Machine

  • factory-grade construction.
  • manually powered using comfort-grip hand wheel.
  • screw mechanism for smooth, efficient cuts.
  • adjustable lower blade.
  • comes with set of stone/porcelain blades installed.
  • weight: 34.7 lbs
  • height of machine: just under 14 inches
  • diameter of hand wheel: 10 inches
  • box dimensions are 12 x 13 x 17 inches

Safety and Cutting Tile

Keep Away From Children. This is factory/shop equipment.

The smooth, efficient cuts made by this machine are MUCH safer than those made by handheld nippers, which snap when they cut and send pieces flying all the time. With these machines, you shouldn’t have pieces flying at all, or at least very rarely. That being said, you should still observe the basic safety rules for using a compressive cutting tools:

  • Always wear safety glasses with side shields when cutting.
  • Make sure that you don’t cut tile around people who are not wearing safety glasses. Flying chips could potentially hit their eyes as easily as yours.
  • Be aware that cutting tile of any type can produce sharp edges.
  • Crumbs from cutting can be extremely sharp. Never sweep off a work surface with your bare hand. Use a vacuum or counter brush.

Mosaic Coaster Base – Square BAMBOO

Mosaic Coaster Base – Square BAMBOO

Our Mosaic Coaster Base – Square Bamboo has a square base that is ~3.93 inches (100 millimeters) wide and ~0.39 inches (10 millimeters) thick. The bamboo material of this square coaster provides it with both durability and a unique finish. The built in coaster bumpers underneath provide a tactile grip that reduces sliding. Unlike our other Mosaic Coaster Base varieties our Mosaic Coaster Base – Square Bamboo has rounded corners for a softer appearance.

Note that the wood is not recessed to form a border for your mosaic. Instead, your mosaic should extend to the edge of the coaster so that the finished coaster looks like a fragment of an ancient mosaic. This is easiest to do when you use tile without a heavy embossed pattern on the underside, and for this reason, we recommend the 8mm Morjo Recycled Glass Mosaic Tile for use with the coasters.

Weldbond adhesive or another high quality PVA glue is recommended for attaching tiles to the coaster base, and there are several options for grouting your mosaic coaster. You can press the tiles closely together instead of leaving a gap, but that requires much more time and effort than leaving an irregular gap and then grouting the mosaic. With an irregular grout gap of 1/16 inch or less, you can use almost every piece of tile you cut because it does not have to be exact. You can also use regular sanded grout to grout it.

Mosaic Art Projects Using Coaster Bases

Product Specifications

  • 1 piece of bamboo square coaster base
  • wood pattern is natural and varies by piece.
  • width: ~3.93 inches (100 millimeters)
  • thickness: ~0.39 inches (10 millimeters)
  • coaster bumpers on bottom side
  • bare wood face
  • rounded corners

Compatibility

Any type of glass mosaic tile could be used with these, but there is no border on the coaster, so your mosaic will go all the way to the edge. If you use a type of glass tile that has coarse embossing or bevels on the underside, then these might look odd at the edge of the mosaic. It is also more difficult to cut a tile into small pieces if the bottom has an embossed pattern. For these reasons, the coasters are best covered with stained glass or the 8mm and 12mm sizes of recycled glass mosaic tile by Morjo. We prefer Morjo to stained glass because stained glass tends to form sharper edges when cut. Whatever tile you decide to use, make sure you file off any sharp edges at the sides of the mosaic using a rough stone or marble file.

Instructions For Using The Coaster Bases For Detailed Mosaic Art

The coaster bases can be used any way you want, including simple projects for children with tiles glued randomly with variable grout spacing, and these make great first-time projects because they are small and do not require as much time and material. However, it is possible to create a more sophisticated mosaic design on the coaster using these instructions. Due to the limited space provided by the coaster, one of the most important steps is making sure you can cut tile small enough to render the smallest detail of your design and modifying your design if necessary:

  1. Find a design or picture. Google Images is a great source of photos, images, patterns, models to draw from.
  2. Draw a simple cartoon outline of your design.
  3. Try cutting up some tile and arranging it on the cartoon to see how it looks.
  4. Pay special attention to the smallest detail in your design.
  5. If it is not possible to cut tile that small, or the pieces seem too tedious to work with, then simplify your design.
  6. Note that when you start using glue, it will be easier to arrange small pieces because they will not move around as unexpectedly. Tweezers also help.
  7. Once you have you have verified that your design is not too detailed to be rendered in tile, then sketch the cartoon on the coaster in pencil.
  8. You can darken your pencil sketch with a Sharpie brand marker so that glue does not rub it off once you start working.
  9. Wipe Weldbond glue over the face of the coaster and allow to dry to seal the wood. Use a very thin coat to avoid warping the coaster from the moisture in the glue! Remember, the reason you are sealing the coaster in the first place is to avoid warping it later when you use lots of glue for the tiles. Use two light coasts and allow to dry thoroughly between coats.
  10. Start tiling your design from the center and working to the edges.
  11. Leaving an irregular grout gap of 1/16 inch or less is much easier than fitting the tile tightly together.
  12. At the edge of the coaster, cut the tile so that it fits flush with the edge. You can place a tile on the coaster, mark where it should be cut with a Sharpie marker before gluing and then make the cut.
  13. Use the fine side of a marble file or a piece of rough stone to rub the edge of the cut tile so that the edge is not as sharp.
  14. After the glue has completely dried (preferably for 48+ hours) grout your mosaic with sanded grout.

How Much Tile Do I Need For The Coaster Base?

The top surface of a ~3.93 inch square coaster base has only ~15.44 square inches (~0.11 square feet) in area. This means you could cover it with ~56 to ~72 pieces of the 12mm Morjo or ~112 to ~161 pieces of the 8mm Morjo depending on how you cut and space the tile. In either case, you might want to order more than that to account for the cutting waste, possibly twice as much if you are fitting the tile exactly with no grout gap.
