Backer Size
This design fits on a 12×12-inch backer when executed in 8mm tile with a hairs-width grout gap between the tiles. Without a tiny grout gap, there may be a slight gap at the edge on a 12×12-inch backer. If so, make sure the mosaic is centered on the backer.
To center a mosaic, position 1 row and 1 column of tile without gluing down the tiles. Evaluate any leftover gap at the edges and center the mosaic accordingly.
Displaying Mosaics Unframed
Many books and authorities recommend NOT extending the tiles all the way to the edge of a backer because it makes those tiles vulnerable to damage by impact and by leaning the mosaic on its edge. We have observed that the 6×6-inch size is small and light enough to be handled without these types of damage being as much of an issue provided the mosaic is handled with care. Also, we think the raw mosaic edge is a vital part of the look and feel when displaying the finished artwork. The make great objects d’art when displayed unframed in the easels used for displaying china plates.

This tool cuts ceramic and porcelain up to 5/16-inch (under 5mm) thick. Thicker dinnerware and stone can be cut using the compound tile nipper. The offset tile nipper can be used to cut recycled glass tile, but it is not recommended for that purpose. The blades are curved which can lead to irregular cuts on stone or marble.

The Offset Tile Nipper is a tile nipper meant for cutting ceramic and porcelain tile. This tool excels at cutting china plates and dinnerware and is easier to use than our ordinary tile nipper when it comes to cutting thin broken china.

Replacement Springs
Replacement Springs are available, but your cutters are not defective or useless if the springs fall off. The springs tend to fall of all hand tools eventually, even the most expensive brands. Keep your pinky fingers inside the handle instead of outside with the rest of your fingers and use that to open the tool. This is basic shop/studio practice for using any type of plier tool, most of which do not come with springs in the first place.
