The Glass on Glass Cloudy Translucents and Transparents Mosaic Art Glass Assortment includes a colorful range of stained glass pieces for glass on glass mosaics. It features wispy, cloudy, translucent and transparent stained glass, and may include one ripple textured piece.
Mosaic Art Glass Assortments feature a 2-lb selection of American-made stained glass pieces for making mosaic art. With opaque work surfaces in mind, we choose pieces for pigment density and opacity. This assortment offers a great way to sample and experiment with a range of stained glass types and colors. If you need an individual color, or find one you love in an assortment, we also have stained glass in 6-inch sheets. Piece size varies, but we try to cut pieces at least 2 to 3 inches wide. Cutting Scrap will have smaller pieces.
Caution: Sharper Edges Than Molded Tile
Because stained glass is usually sharper than regular molded glass mosaic tile, extra care must be used in cutting, handling, and grouting to ensure that sharp edges are not left exposed. At the studio, we sometimes cut up sheets of stained glass into tiles and then swirl the tiles around in a plastic bucket with a little water to knock off the razor slivers from the freshly-cut edges (called flash or groze). The Rubbing Stone and Marble File we sell are useful for smoothing sharp edges and are recommended when the mosaic is for a wall or architectural element.
The traditional tool used by stained glass artists for this purpose is the Grozing Pliers, but the Rubbing Stones and Marble Files produce smoother edges and can be used to round off sharp points and corners.

Each two-pound bag is approximately 1.25 square feet of glass. If you cut these pieces into mosaic tiles of about 3/4 inch or less and use a grout gap of 1/16 inch, then the bag could cover 1.5 square feet.
Stained glass is approximately 1/8 inch thick and nominally the same as most of the glass mosaic tile we sell. Some vitreous glass colors have a more grainy composition than others, and might not look right alongside stained glass due to the difference in glossy finish. The more glassy low-grain Lojee-Nojee™ tiles look fine with stained glass.
Cutting Stained Glass
Glass can be cut quickly with minimal force using our Mosaic Glass Cutters. Use this wheeled cutter for irregular rectangle and triangle shapes. For curved cuts, use the Pistol-Grip Cutter to score the glass, and a pair of Running Pliers to apply pressure and snap it. You can also use cutting oil to lubricate cutters for more precision.
Mounting Art Glass Mosaics
First, before mounting always rinse stained glass with detergent to remove any traces of cutting oil residue. Even if you don’t use cutting oil, it may be present from the manufacturer. For dry indoor mosaics, Weldbond adhesive works well for mounting stained glass. However, for outdoor and wet mosaics, use thinset mortar.
Stained Glass in Mosaic Art
Stained glass can add a range of textural effects and luminescence to mosaic art. Various types of stained glass feature mottled surfaces, cloudy and wispy qualities, or streaks and swirls. While molded tile tends to be uniform in color and opacity, stained glass has a varied and painterly nature.
Individual Colors Available As 6-Inch Sheets
If you need an individual color of stained glass, we also sell it in 6-inch square sheets. Email us if you’d like help identifying a stained glass color from an assortment.
