Mosaic Backer Boards

We sell multiple types of Mosaic Backer Boards. Short descriptions follow, but please click on a product to see the full description.

Plywood Backer Boards are cut from 1/2-inch cabinet-grade sanded plywood (either maple or birch based on availability) and are suitable for indoor mosaic projects such as plaques and trivets. The edges of the plywood boards are unfinished cuts, which can be left as is or painted with a neutral color of acrylic paint, stained with wood stain, etc. The faces of some boards have small splinters missing from the sawing process, but these will be covered by the mosaic.

Extruded Polystyrene “XPS” Backer Boards have a polystyrene core that is laminated on both sides with fibreglass mesh and a very thin coat of polymer-modified cement. You can compare this product to “wedi” brand “building board” aka “wediboard” – but the kind we sell is “Everbilt” brand. The advantage of XPS board is it is lighter than plywood and is rated for wet locations.

GoBoard brand Foam Core Board is also a foam backer board, but the fibreglass lamination layer is blown (instead of mesh) and the foam is made of polyisocyanurate which is tougher than XPS. This material weighs marginally more per square foot than XPS-type backer board. Artists with sensitive skin should wear tiling gloves or nitrile gloves while handling GoBoard.
