Toy Glass Marbles ~5/8-Inch are sold in lots of 7 ounces, which is approximately 30 “player size” marbles for use in mosaic art projects. Note that the 5/8-inch (15mm) size is nominal, and actual dimensions can vary between just over 1/2 inches to just less than 3/4 inches. Toy marbles such as these can be used as an improvised form of glass mosaic tile when pressed into wet concrete such as commonly done when making mosaic stepping stones. (Press marbles deeply enough into the concrete so that a slip hazard is not created.) Note that toy marbles are spherical and are not easily glued to a surface like ordinary flat tile. Most varieties are opaque and have brightly swirled colors.
Toy Glass Marbles ~5/8-Inch
- 5/18 inch (15mm) nominal diameter (varies).
- sold by weight (7 ounces).
- approximately 30+ marbles.
- piece count varies because the size varies.
- Made in Mexico.
- Not produced as a building material, but the mineral pigments are thought to be color fast even in UV light.
- impervious to moisture.
- frost proof.
- suitable for indoor and outdoor use.
30 marbles could cover about 7 to 8 square inches, but marbles are best used as accents in mixed-media mosaics and not as area coverage.
Round marbles don’t easily glue to a flat surface, and most glass mosaic tile is roughly 1/8 inch (4mm) thick, which is significantly thinner than the marbles. If you use marbles with glass mosaic tile, make sure you press them into mortar or concrete instead of trying to attach them to a flat surface.
We don’t recommend cutting toy glass marbles.
Use in Mosaic Art
We recommend glass marbles for pressing into concrete and mortar, such as done when a mosaic stepping stone mold is used to make art for the lawn or garden. Keep in mind that whatever materials you use to make a stepping stone, make sure that you do not leave sharp edges exposed or create a slick surface that could be a slip hazard when wet. In practical terms, that means leaving some bare concrete or grout between pieces of smooth glass.
