Description

Factory Error Letter Tiles

We are out of normal letter tiles, and they have been discontinued by the manufacturer.

All remaining letter sets have factory errors. Most of them have four of the A’s merged together where they can’t be broken apart easily, as illustrated in the main product photo.

Because of the factory error, these remaining letter sets are being offered at $9.00 which is $5 off of the original price of $14.00 which all the good ones had been sold at.

The original product description is displayed below.

Ceramic Letter Tile Sets are sheets that contain 5/8 inch high Arial letters that can be snapped off by gloved hand to yield individual embossed letter tiles. These American-made letter tiles allow an artist to quickly insert initials, words, and phrases into mixed-media mosaic projects. We also have Ceramic Number Tile Sets.

Ceramic Letter Tile Sets

  • American made from local clay.
  • glazed ceramic.
  • arial font 5/8 inch.
  • thickness: 7/32 inches nominal.
  • height: 5/8 inches.
  • width: varies by letter.
  • sheets may arrive with some letters already snapped off but still usable.
  • Susceptible to freeze damage. Use a tile and grout sealer.

Preventing Freeze Damage

Glazed ceramic materials are particularly susceptible to freeze damage, as are all porous materials. There are micro cracks in the glaze, which allows moisture to penetrate into the pores of the ceramic and then freeze, expand and crack the material. This can be minimized by sealing your FINISHED mosaic with multiple applications of a tile and grout sealer from the local building material store. You can also prevent this damage by bringing you stepping stones and mosaic lawn sculptures inside for the winter months.

Product Coverage / Letter Count

This product is not sold for area coverage, but there is about 0.2 square feet of total material, which is broken up and used as individual letters. The letter count is more relevant and is as follows: A-9, B-2, C-2, D-7, E-12, F-2, G-3, H-2, I-10, J-1, K-1, L-4, M-2, N-6, O-6, P-2, Q-1, R-5, S-5, T-4, U-2, V-2, W-2, X-1, Y-1, Z-1.

Compatibility

Tile thickness is just under 1/4 inch. The specimens measured were 7/32 inch thick, but this could vary by manufacturer batch, possible +/- 1/32 inch. The thickness is actually ideal because most of our glass mosaic tile is about 1/8 inch (4mm), so the letters will stick out above this, giving the surface of your mosaic texture and dimension.

Cutting Tile

These are not made to be cut. Instead, they are snapped with a gloved hand. Use a straight edge such as a ruler or the edge of a table to make sure the sheet breaks cleanly in the flashing between the letters. Otherwise you might have jagged breaks that damage the letters.

Use in Mosaic Art

As discussed above, sealing with a tile and grout sealer is important for preventing freeze damage. When broken free from the sheets, the letters will still be surrounded with some flat material at the base. This is flash from the mold/dye used to press the sheet and does not have to be removed. It should be covered with grout when the mosaic is grouted.

Mounting Ceramic Letter Tiles

For dry indoor mosaics, stained glass can be mounted using Weldbond adhesive, but thinset mortar should be used for outdoor and wet mosaics.
