Painted Desert Assortment 3/4-Inch Glass Mosaic Tile Mix 1-lb

Our Painted Desert Glass Mosaic Tile Mix is a beautiful desert-themed glass tile assortment with warm earth tones, stone greys and blues, light sky teals and fire orange. This mix includes a combination of Morjo Vitreous and low-grain Lojee-Nojee tile, which adds textural variety and a great way to sample both brands.

These tiles are hard and durable enough for outdoor installation, yet they can quickly be cut into halves, quarters and triangles with little force using a pair of mosaic glass cutters. The grooved side bonds adhesive more securely and also makes for easier cutting. To plan your design, use a mounting grid.

For a mini version of this mix, check out our Albuquerque assortment.

Painted Desert Glass Mosaic Tile Assortment 3/4-Inch

  • Price is per 1 pound (roughly 145+ tiles).
  • Tile dimensions: 3/4 inch x 3/4 inch (20mm x 20mm).
  • Tile thickness: 4mm (1/8 inch nominal).
  • Material: glass
  • Coverage: each pound covers 0.69 square feet.
  • Coverage: 218 loose tiles cover 1 sq ft. with grout spacing of 1/16 inch.
  • Frost-proof, impervious to liquid.
  • Suitable for indoor/outdoor use.

Product Coverage

Each pound covers 0.69 square feet assuming a standard grout spacing of 1/16 inch. Coverage for 1 square foot requires 218 tiles. Note that cutting tiles generates some scrap, so you may want to budget 5% extra.

Compatibility

Because the 3/4 inch size (20mm) and 1/8 inch nominal thickness (4mm) is industry standard, you can combine these tiles with a wide variety of brands.

Cutting Glass Tile

We recommend the Mosaic Glass Cutter for cutting all types of glass mosaic tile including these. Note, however, that there is a limit to how small they can be cut. Due to their tapered edges, small pieces will tend to tip over. We advise cutting halves and quarters and diagonal triangles, and not much smaller than that. For creating outlines and other details, check out our Rectangle Border Tiles or our Outliners Mosaic Sticks.

Mounting Tile

Weldbond adhesive works well for mounting dry indoor mosaics. However, to permanently set outdoor and wet mosaics, use thinset mortar.

Use in Mosaic Art

The affordability, ease of use and durability of these tiles makes them suitable for outdoor projects such as garden décor. The pigment quality also lends itself equally well to photorealistic mosaic images and fine art.

ProControl Mosaic Glass Cutter

Pro Control Glass Nipper

Mosaic Art Supply is proud to be the first online retailer to carry the new ProControl Mosaic Glass Cutter Model 32014. This is a sophisticated and ergonomic hand tool for cutting glass mosaic tile. The ProControl Mosaic Glass Cutter is a compression nipper just like our regular mosaic glass cutter, but has numerous improvements to appeal to professional mosaic artists who are cutting glass tile all the time.

  • Weighs less than the traditional mosaic glass cutter (8.6 oz instead of 10.8 oz)
  • Has longer handles (1 inch extra) to make cutting easier
  • Has a tile thickness lock to reduce hand fatigue
  • Comes with a hex key built into the back for adjusting or changing the blades
  • Has a cutting-depth guide to help make uniform cuts
  • Has thicker, more comfortable handle grips
  • QEP Model # 32014

Note that LONG strips of glass are made with a different tool (Pistol-Grip Cutter), which scores the glass instead of nipping it like the ProControl tool does.

This tool cuts glass up to 3/8-inch thick with minimal crushing and splintering, and it easily cuts molded tile into quarters, halves and triangles. It is also great for nipping up small pieces of stained glass, although it is not a scoring tool for making long straight cuts in stained glass. This is a compression tool and tile is squeezed between the blades, and the circular blades do not actually rotate while cutting.

Replacement blades are available, although the blades should last for years if you don’t abuse them by attempting to cut materials other than glass, which ruins the precision of the tool itself by warping it.

Wheeled cutters such as the ProControl Mosaic Glass Cutter are the appropriate tool for cutting glass tiles. Unlike ordinary tile nippers, wheeled glass cutters won’t crush and splinter the glass. Instead, the cuts will be cleaner and less tile will be wasted as splinters.

Safety and Cutting Tile

  • Always wear safety glasses with side shields when using the cutters.
  • Make sure that you don’t cut glass around people who are not wearing safety glasses. Flying chips could potentially hit their eyes as easily as yours.
  • Never use a mosaic glass cutter to cut materials other than glass, especially hard porcelain. The wheel-shaped blades can shatter. Cutting materials other than glass also ruins the precision of the cutters!
  • Be aware that cutting glass tile can produce sharp tiny slivers. Never sweep off a work surface with your bare hand. Use a vacuum or counter brush.

Product Specifications for ProControl Mosaic Glass Cutter

  • aluminum hand plier with cushion grip
  • 8.5 oz,
  • replaceable carbide steel cutting blades
  • can be adjusted depending on tile thickness and preferred cut depth
  • comes with a hex key for easy blade adjustment
  • QEP model number 32014

How To Cut Glass Tile

Hold the cutter over a cardboard box or plastic dishpan to catch broken pieces and tiny slivers.

Hold vitreous glass tile upside down when cutting so that you can see the embossed pattern of ridges on the bottom. Make sure you position the blade so that the ridges do not interfere with it. It is easier to cut across a ridge or in a crease between two ridges than it is to try to cut with the blade on top of a ridge where it can slip off.

Efficient Cutting

It is much easier to cut up four or five pieces of tile and choose the one that fits best than it is to try to trim one piece to a certain shape or size. It is quicker too. Keep your rejects in a small pile and pay attention to the shapes that are in it. If you don’t use a certain size or shape as often, try to cut fewer pieces like that. This is much more effective than trimming a piece down to what you need, and it is a lot less tedious.

Replacement Springs

Replacement Springs are available, but your cutters are not defective or useless if the springs fall off. The springs tend to fall of all hand tools eventually, even the most expensive brands. Keep your pinky fingers inside the handle instead of outside with the rest of your fingers and use that to open the tool. This is basic shop/studio practice for using any type of plier tool, most of which do not come with springs in the first place.

Broken Millefiori Glass

Broken Millefiori Glass Promo

Description

BROKEN Millefiori Glass 8mm-12mm (5/16 inch to 1/2 inch) by Mud Turtle Mosaic™ is sold in 2-ounce units (approximately 55+ pieces). THESE ARE BROKEN PIECES OF OUR REGULAR MILLEFIORI. MOST PIECES ARE FLAME POLISHED AND NICE, BUT EXPECT A FEW FLAKES AND SHARDS TOO SMALL FOR USE, MAYBE 2% BY WEIGHT.

Our millefiori is a next-generation product that is much more affordable than traditional Italian millefiori and is actually superior in several ways. For starters, the glass used is translucent and semi-translucent instead of being fully opaque, and this makes the colors more vibrant. Second, the Mud Turtle Mosaic is more cleanly cut and flame polished, so the pieces are smooth with a molded appearance instead of the rough, irregular, and uneven pieces usually seen in Italian millefiori, which is much more expensive.

What Is BROKEN Millefiori?

BROKEN pieces of Millefiori, which is a traditional form of art glass that is disk-shaped with different multicolored patterns and is used in glass fusing, jewelry, and mosaic art.

Product Coverage

This is a problematic question because the BROKEN millefiori was intended to be used as an accent instead of as area coverage, and the piece size can vary. That being said, one 2-ounce bag should cover roughly 5 or 6 square inches, but that will depend somewhat on how efficiently you nest the pieces.

Compatibility

The thickness varies, usually running between 1/8 inch and 3/16 inch. This makes it about the same thickness as most of the glass mosaic tile we sell, with some pieces slightly thicker.

Cutting BROKEN Millefiori

In theory the BROKEN millefiori can be cut using a pair of Mosaic Glass Cutters, but the pieces are already small enough to make cutting unnecessary and problematic.

Mud Turtle Mosaic™ BROKEN Millefiori 10mm-12mm

  • Price is per 2 ounces (approximately 55+ pieces)
  • Diameter: approximately 8 to 12 mm (5/16 inch to 1/2 inch).
  • Thickness: roughly 1/8 inch and 3/16 inch.
  • Coverage: each 2 ounce bag should cover roughly 5 or 6 square inches.
  • Material: glass with solid color throughout.
  • Coefficient Of Expansion (COE): 90.
  • frost proof.
  • impervious to liquids.
  • Suitable for indoor and outdoor installation.
  • Not suitable for floors.

DISCONTINUED – Sample Board Morjo™ Triangle Glass Tile 3/4 Inch

IMPORTANT: Triangle Glass Tiles were discontinued by the manufacturer
As we run out of colours we will not be able to replace them. This sample board has many colours that are no longer available. The sample board price has been permanently dropped to account for this. The original product description continues below:

Sample Board for Triangle Glass Tile by Morjo comes with one of each tile in our color palette.

Sample Boards

Sample boards should be used wisely with the understanding that all tile can vary by manufacturer batch, even the most expensive brands. This is because tile is fired in a kiln, and that process is more difficult to control than mixing paint, and so there can be differences in shade or hue. Feel free to contact us if you need to know if a color has changed since you ordered your sample board. MORJORecycled Glass TRIANGLE Tiles by MORJO are sold loose by the 1/2 pound (approximately 115+ pieces), which covers slightly over 1/3 of a square foot with a standard grout gap of 1/16 inch. These tiles have a glossy finish, and the glass has solid color throughout (and not just on the tops or bottoms.) They are opaque when mounted on an opaque surface.

WARNING: COLOR NAMES

The Triangles use the same colors names as Morjo 12mm square tiles, but the colors are not the same for the current batch of Yellow and the Cyan Blues. Look at the pictures. Yellow is a little greenish, and the Spring Green Light is almost a yellow. The Cyan Blues have hues that are more pewter-ish than desired. Other colors (with less difficult pigments) are spot on. Slight batch variations can always impact matching with square tile colors. Do not assume exact matches. -Joe Moorman 09/10/2019.

Material

The recycled glass is a homogeneous material that cuts cleanly and predictably using the Wheel-bladed Mosaic Glass Cutter. They are hard and durable and UV-resistant and can be used for the exteriors of commercial buildings. The fusing process for making these tiles from powdered recycled glass is referred to as “warm glass” or “enamel glass” or “pate de verre.”

Morjo Recycled Glass Triangle Tile

  • tile size: ~3/4 inch (20mm) on a side
  • thickness: 1/8 nominal (4mm)
  • sales unit: 1/2 pound loose tile (about 115+ pieces).
  • material: glass
  • variety: recycled glass
  • pigments: colorfast, UV resistant
  • durability: frost-proof, impervious to liquid
  • usage: suitable for indoor and outdoor use

Coverage

Each 1/2-pound bag of about 115+ tiles covers a little over 1/3 of a square foot assuming a standard grout gap of 1/16 inch.

Grout Gap?

Note that dry indoor mosaics do not have to be grouted (and thus you can simply mount the tiles tightly together), but outdoor and wet mosaics must have grout to prevent water from penetrating behind the tiles. The best way to ensure that the gaps between the tiles is to leave a 1/16-inch gap instead of pressing them tightly together, and this point seems counterintuitive to some people. Consider this: you can never mount them so closely together that water can’t penetrate it, but you can accidentally put them so close that grout doesn’t get adequately pressed into the crack during the grouting process.

Compatibility

These tiles have a NOMINAL thickness of 1/8 inch (4mm), which is the same nominal thickness as most of the glass tile we sell. All tile varies by batch, but any variance in thickness should be irrelevant to most users. You can use these with other brands of recycled glass and even vitreous glass, although the graininess of some vitreous colors might not look good when combined with the homogeneous glassiness of recycled glass tiles.

Cutting Recycled Glass Triangle Tile

Recycled glass cuts like butter using the Mosaic Glass Cutters without creating a lot slivers or cutting waste. This makes them ideal for micromosaic or rendering small details in larger work.

Sample Board Morjo™ Thinny-Pennies™ Round Recycled Glass Tiles 3/4 Inch

20mm Thinny Pennies Glass Penny Rounds Sample BoardSample Board Morjo™ Thinny-Pennies™ Round Recycled Glass Tiles 3/4 Inch comes with one of each tile in our color palette in the 3/4 inch (20mm) size. Here is more information about the tiles and how they are used: MORJO Thinny-Pennies are 20mm Penny Round Recycled Glass Tiles. They are sold loose by the 1/2 pound (approximately 70+ pieces), which covers slightly under 1/3 of a square foot (~42 square inches) with a standard grout gap of 1/16 inch. These tiles have a glossy finish, and the glass has solid color throughout (and not just on the tops or bottoms.) They are opaque when mounted on an opaque surface. The Thinny Pennies are the same thickness as regular glass mosaic tile (4mm or ~1/8 inch) and not fat like glass gems. This makes them much easier to use with other types of glass tile and easier to grout.

Rough Bottoms for Improved Bonding

The bottoms of these tiles are left intentionally rough from gritty mold release (chalk) for improved bond strength. In my experience, and rough, scratched, or etched glass is more effective than embossed ridges. Rough bottoms also has another important advantage over embossed ridges: they don’t interfere with cutting.

  • thickness: 1/8 nominal (4mm)
